Invitation to Participate in the Online Workshop for Research on Inclusive AI-Driven Visual Art in the Global South

We are a group of scholars from the Global Smart Lab, Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton working on a new AI model to generate artwork representing the cultural context of the underrepresented group. We are looking for participants for an online workshop on Artificial Intelligence Generated Content with the current model from OpenAI and Midjounrey. This workshop is open to everyone who is interested in the AIGC and creating the image with AI. The workshop will be online in May and June and will cover the focus group to discuss and identify the bias within the current AIGC models. If you are interested in attending, please register for one of the slots by this link on Eventbrite:

We welcome all users of AI models to generate images from the culture-underrepresented areas of Global South to join us for this research workshop with a focus group on exploring how to navigate the mind journey of creating AI-generated content (AIGC) image based on the underrepresented cultural identities from the Global South.

  1. Monday 16th June: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
  2. Tuesday 17th June: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
  3. Wendesday 18th June: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
  4. Thursday 19th June: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
  5. Friday 20th June: 2:00pm – 4:00pm

This a research project funded by the Web Science Institute of the University of Southampton and led by Dr Ruohan Tang, Dr Shepuya Famwang and Dr Chao Zheng. In the workshop, the participants will have three activities led by the research team. In the first activity, they will be asked to work with the current image generation model to generate an artwork as the image when they feel the outcome meets their expectation. They will be asked to use 10 prompts to achieve that satisfaction. The second activity will ask them to identify a specific art style or art pattern from their cultural background and then adjust their outcome in the first activity to meet that art style or art pattern based on their cultural background. They will also be asked to use 10 prompts in the second activity. The third activity is a discussion with other participants about this process to generate the artwork with an AI model to represent their cultural identity and how this process works or whether the outcome reflects their context-awareness of the underrepresented culture in Global South areas.
The participant information sheet and consent form will be sent to your email after registration of the event.
