The Global Smart Lab at Winchester School of Art (WSA) recently hosted a hands-on training session in our Motion Capture Lab, introducing participants to the powerful capabilities of our Vicon Valkyrie system. This workshop was designed to support the growing interest in motion capture across disciplines at the University of Southampton.

The session welcomed a wide range of attendees, including technicians, researchers, and PhD students from across the university. Participants came from several departments, including the E-Textiles Lab and Digital Humanities, reflecting the diverse potential applications of motion capture technology in creative, academic, and research-based contexts.
The training covered essential aspects of the system—camera setup, calibration, marker placement, real-time capture, and data export—equipping attendees with the foundational skills needed to integrate motion capture into their own work.

By offering access to this technology and the skills to use it effectively, the Motion Capture Lab is building a collaborative, interdisciplinary network across the university. Whether you’re working in art, design, media, or research, our lab is here to support innovative uses of motion tracking in both established and emerging fields.
If you’re based at the University of Southampton and interested in using the system for your own projects, the Global Smart Lab team would love to hear from you.
